I was drinking a grande latte the other day in Starbucks while reading one of my orthodontic research journals.  I came across an article that I thought might interest you.  It was a study done at the University of Michigan to evaluate the attitudes of how the public judges people with uncorrected orthodontic problems.  Whether we think it is fair or not, the public makes a variety of assumptions.  They rated photos of adults with malocclusions to be not only less attractive, but less intelligent, less conscientious and less approachable.  The 889 respondents also stated that they would be less likely to interact with them in both personal and professional settings.

We recently had a staff meeting to discuss the topic of customer (patient) service.  As we enter our thirty-third year in business, it is a time to reflect on how we grew our practice.  Although professional referrals (dentists) are still a major influence on how parents/patients select our office for their care, word of mouth patient-to-patient recommendations continue to be the fastest growing reason for our success. Parents are often very confused when their family dentist refers their child to our office at a young age (ages 6-10).  They know that their child still has lots of baby teeth and are expecting us to recommend braces.  They are concerned that it is too early for braces and that it may be a waste of time and money.  While it is true that we rarely recommend braces at this age, it is very important to get an early orthodontic evaluation.
